The first of five match series between England and Australia at Rose Bowl (Southampton) marked a historic occasion for the One-Day Internationals. This was the 3000th match in ODI history. By a quirk of fate, the 3000th ODI was played between the sides who contested the first ever ODI in 1971.
It took ODIs nearly 10 years to complete century of matches. The first 1000 matches were completed in a span of more than 24 years. Next 1000 took a little less than 8 years and next 1000 needed just over 7 years!
